Financial Relief Available to Blackhawk Technical College Students through CARES Act

April 30, 2020 By Press Release

Many of us have had our lives disrupted by the public health emergency, and many of us may be facing financial challenges and struggle to make ends meet. We understand that this may be particularly true for many of our students. Blackhawk is pleased to announce that they have received a $1,100,944 grant from the US Department of Education through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The grant funding will provide direct relief to help students address expenses and hardships that may have incurred during the crisis. Funding can be used for education-related expenses such as technology, food, housing, healthcare, childcare, or course materials. The College has assembled a Blackhawk CARES Team to evaluate students’ needs and to distribute available money to eligible students.

To be eligible, students must have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) for the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 academic year. Blackhawk Technical College must be designated on the student’s FAFSA. If you have not completed this form and would like to be considered for CARES Act funding, you must submit a FAFSA at this time. The Blackhawk Technical College FAFSA CODE is 005390.  More information on submitting the FAFSA is available at https://www.blackhawk.edu/Paying-for-College/Financial-Aid.

Students must apply for assistance by completing a short survey that can be found on the student portal (MyBTC) homepage under announcements. You must log in to access the form.  To determine eligibility for the funding, students must complete the survey by May 13.

These emergency assistance grants will be funded 100% by the U.S. Department of Education, no College resources will be used. Don’t wait to apply as funds will be dispersed based on student need on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students will be notified about their grant via Blackhawk email.

Other emergency grants are available to BTC students through the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation. If you are interested in other resources for emergency expenses or are not eligible for the CARES funds visit the BTC Emergency Financial Assistance webpage for more information and additional funding options.
